Blog Reveal + Williams-Sonoma Giveaway!

Merry Christmas Eve!

Yes, it’s me, Natalie. We’re still unpacking and swimming in boxes, but we love our new place! My appetite has also returned (hallelujah) so it seems everything is back to normal.

Oh yeah, and a little thing called a BLOG REDESIGN. (If you’re reading this in a feed reader, you may want to click over for this…)

I know! I can barely recognize my own blog! You know how when you get an amazing haircut and you can’t quit looking at yourself in the mirror? That’s kind of how I feel right now. Eyes glued to the computer screen.

I adore the new look created by the lovely Lindsay at Purr Design. I especially love the plate illustrations created by my dear friend (in real life) Kathryn Colton. What do you think??

Aside from the spiffy layout, there are a few new features that will make everyone (especially me) happier.

1. Simple commenting. No need to have a Google/Blogger account to leave a comment! And it’ll make giveaways much easier since I’ll have everyone’s contact info.

2. The Visual Index. I was pretty excited about this one. It may look not-so-visual right now, but as soon as I’m finished with all of the tedious uploading, every recipe in the index will have a thumbnail image. Hooray!

3. Magazine format. On the front page you’ll notice that there are short “snippets” of several posts after the current one. I love this because you don’t have to scroll all the way down the page to see what’s new. It’s right there. Oh, and those thumbnails will show up shortly (see #2).

4. Easy (and pretty) Recipe Printing. I think I was doing a pretty good job of making recipes easy to print, but now they have a snazzy print button. Still working out some kinks with that.

5. One-Stop Networking. See that bright pink box on the right-hand side? Everything you need to connect with Perry’s Plate is right there. Receive email updates, RSS feed updates, or follow on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or Google +! Basically everything but my home address, right? But if you happen to be in the Reno/Tahoe area and want to meet for lunch, I may even give you that.

Just like in years past, I’ll be giving away some magazine subscriptions! I waited (not so) patiently until my blog was finished because what better way to celebrate a makeover than with free stuff?

Three of you will have your choice of Bon Appetit or Food Network Magazine for a whole year.

Already subscribe to those? Send your winnings to someone else!

AND…
I recently received a generous Williams-Sonoma gift card from some dear friends and since I’ve had so much fun mulling over which knife to buy, I decided to share the love with you.
So, another winner will get a $100 gift card to Williams-Sonoma!

To Enter:

The entries for last year’s mag subscription giveaway were so touching that I want to do the same thing this year. Just leave a comment and answer this question for me:

What are you grateful for?

A few little details…

1. Comments will close on Friday, December 30, 2011 at 8PM PST. I’ll use a random number generator to choose FOUR winners that I will contact and announce here on the 31st. If I don’t get a response from the winners after three days I’ll pick new ones.

2. One entry per person. As much as I love having new Facebook and Twitter pals, I want you to follow me because you genuinely like my blog. Not for extra entries in a contest.

3. Contest open to US and Canadian residents only.

4. Leave a valid email address for me to contact you. This should be easy now, right?

I’ll be back with an actual recipe soon (gasp). Enjoy the new site, and let me know if you run into any kinks!

***CONTEST CLOSED!***

Contest not affiliated with either magazine or Williams-Sonoma. Sponsored by Perry’s Plate.

Hard financial times teach one to be grateful for every little thing, but none more so than my wife and children. No matter how bleak things looked, I was surrounded by joy and love.

First of all, I absolutely adore your blog’s redesign. Congratulations! (Is that the sort of thing you’re supposed to give congratulations for?! Hmm.)
Next, I am so excited to hear you’re back! I’ve loved your guests posts, as well, but I can’t wait to see what you’ve been cooking. :)
As for the contest — I’m thankful for the support of my family, friends, professors and people in my church and community. I’m also thankful for all the opportunities I’ve had… even though sometimes I complain about grad school more than I should. Thanks for the chance to win!

Love the new look. Simple, functional and fun.

This year I am grateful for my family and health, and mostly that we get to be together this year and that my hubby is not deployed. The fact it is December and we have no snow on the ground doesn’t hurt either. lol. We usually have 3 or 4 feet on the ground by this time. :) Thank you for hosting this giveaway. I hope you have a Merry Christmas.

I am grateful for so many things! A warm home, sunshine, the patient kindness of family and friends, sweet Christmas cards in the mail (!), clean fresh air, excellent health thanks to being surrounded by supportive healers and the innate power of G-d, feeling the love of the world reflected in the glory of nature…I am grateful for my human experience.

I am also reminded of this quote I love so much:

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.

This year has been one of the most trying for me, but I wouldn’t change it because I’ve grown in many ways. I’ve learned that I’m stronger than I thought and life is what you make it. Just take it one day at a time and one day you’ll be able to look back and say I made it! My new mantra is live life, have fun and be happy!

I never thought he would be so excited about home-ownership, but he has really stepped up and taken care of a lot of the details that I have been too overwhelmed to handle. He’s the best!

I am grateful for my husband’s job (because this is the 3rd one this year) and that we were blessed with more than enough for our needs during his 2 stints of unemployment this year- enabling us to pay off some debt, while unemployed. this year, i am thankful for Skype. we opted to spend this christmas at our apartment in toronto, instead of flying home to the west coast to be with our families over the holidays (both my husband and i are from Victoria, BC – but we’re living out east while my husband completes a phd). we thought it might be nice to have a quiet little christmas for once, which was a thought motivated by the truth that a $1500 trip twice a year (we visited this summer already, and will be returning next summer for a wedding) isn’t something we could easily afford while only one of us is working full time. so we are having a quiet, just-the-two-of-us (and our two kittens) christmas. i’m still cooking a turkey, and we’re still enjoying many of the traditions that we usually celebrate… midnight mass & a christmas eve feast, mandarin oranges in our stockings… but i know there is going to be something missing. so i’m looking forward to connecting with our extended families remotely this year during their christmas dinners. we’ll get to see our one-year-old nephew on the computer screen, and say hello to aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, parents, and grandparents, and it will be (almost) like we’re there with everyone! it is nice to spend a romantic christmas together, but when we’re feeling a little nostalgic for our extended families i know i’ll be so grateful that Skype will be there to make us feel like we’re all together.

I stepped up when she passed and I make him “meals on wheels” every week for the whole week, and the doctor has told me his blood pressure has went down, his cholesterol went down, and he’s healthier than ever. I am so grateful that we can afford to visit our families over the Christmas holidays. I would be really sad to be home alone in Texas today.

They have been amazing and I often think about how lucky we are to have them in our community. My youngest son has had several medical issues requiring tests and surgeries over the past two years and we’re very blessed by how well he’s doing now and don’t take it for granted. This year I have so much to be grateful for, but topping my list is my amazing husband. I spent most of this year studying for a professional licensing exam and he supported me 100%. He picked up extra cooking and cleaning, and gave up on fun activities and lazing about on the couch with me so that I could spend the time I needed. Then he even took off work to drive me to and from the exam, spending an entire vacation day stuck in a hotel while I answered multiple choice questions. Thankfully, I passed so we don’t have to do it all again. Seriously though, his support rocked my world. : )

This holiday I’m grateful for finally being employed after 2 and a half long years after a lay off. I’m also thankful to have my family together this year, despite some personal problems within the unit. I’m thankful for my health and the health of my family, again after a rough year of surgeries and health problems that plagued so many.

Today I am so grateful for understanding kids. I have a chronic illness that somewhat compromises what I can do on a daily basis. My kids understand that I have to take naps, and I can’t do everything we would like to do. They are so young, but so loving. In fact, my oldest (9yr old boy) was in primary learning about the gifts of the Spirit. When his teacher asked him what gift he would like, he answered, “I want the gift of healing for my mom.” It still brings tears to my eyes. Oh, to be as forgiving and wonderful as children!

Love the new design. Everything is so clean and organized. I’m especially excited about the visual index. I’m all about pictures, especially when it comes to food…and babies. Speaking of babies, I’m grateful for the little one who is sleeping in my arms right now. Motherhood, while the hardest most completely taxing thing I have ever done, has helped me recognize and receive blessings with more clarity and abundance than anything I’ve experienced before. In particular, it has brought me closer to my Heavenly Father and increased my gratitude for and dependance upon the atonement of Jesus Christ. I now understand the atonement a bit more fully and know to a greater depth how much I need and love my Savior and my Heavenly Father, and I am so grateful for that.

I’m grateful for my friends and family! Even though we may not always like each other, we will always love each other. I’m also grateful for this blog; it’s saving me since I’ve made some major dietary changes. The recipes are simple to begin with which makes them simple to modify if needed!

I am so grateful that my daughter has had a good year. She is in middle school and is the tallest girl, she has red hair (which is now a bad thing?) and is smart, which makes her a target of bullying. To top it all off, she was diagnosed with epilepsy last September. In the time of life when it is so important to be just like everyone else, she is different in every way. She spent most of last year feeling terrible about herself. Now she has decided that she likes who she is and her confidence is growing. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing a smile on her beautiful face! I thank God for the work he has done in her and I really feel that He has something special planned for her. I can’t wait to see what she does with her confidence, intelligence and compassion for others that she learned through all of this!

I am so so overwhelmingly grateful for my health. This has been the first holiday in 4 years that I’ve been healthy, have been able to enjoy the holidays and family gatherings, and have been able to enjoy the food and eating. I’m coming up on my 1 year anniversary of improving health. I still have a long way to go, but I’m so grateful for every single improvement every single day!

I feel the same way this year that I did about last year. It’s a miracle that we made it through. The job situations have been strange and stressful, we’ve had some health issues which have, fortunately, resolved. I’m a so hopeful that 2012 will be easier than 2011 was. We’re just thrilled to have made it through. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

I’ve had breast cancer twice in the past 10 years and a blood clot in my neck this year caused by radiation treatment. I never take my health or time on earth for granted. My son and his wife are coming home for good after teaching English for two years in South Korea. So when they arrive later this winter it will be my best Christmas present. Am grateful I am here to enjoy having them closer to home and not be an ocean apart from us. My son, daughter, daughter-in-law and husband are wonderful, caring people who make my world better for being in it!
