Notes on Key Ingredients

How to Make Homemade Hummus

All you do is toss it all into a food processor and buzz it up!

Don't have a food processor? Get one! I'm sorta serious. First, I use mine more than I use my stand mixer. It's a necessity at this point. Second, it's hard to do this without one. If you use a blender, scrape down the sides and use some extra water. It'll have a looser consistency, but it'll still taste good.

Tips for Extra Silky Hummus

If you want extra silky hummus, try removing the skins from the beans before blending. (Yes, seriously.) My Israeli friend told me this, and while I'm not as committed to extra silky hummus, it's good to know that's how it's done!

Flavor Variations

Roasted Red Pepper Hummus

Add ½ cup of roasted red peppers and swap out some of the olive oil with the oil from the jar.

Sun-Dried Tomato Hummus

Same as above. I'd start with ⅓ cup of sun-dried tomatoes since they have a stronger flavor and add more to taste. You can also use the oil from the jar to add more flavor.

Roasted Garlic Hummus

You can use store-bought roasted garlic or roast your own and blend it up! You can probably use a whole head of roasted garlic since roasting it calms and sweetens its flavor.

Spicy Hummus

Add some cayenne, chili crunch, or crushed red pepper flakes in your hummus to add heat.

What to Serve with Hummus

As a Dip

Chopped raw vegetables are most commonly served with hummus, but you can get creative with it!

As a Sauce or Spread

Thin it out with a little extra water and oil and use it as a sauce for a rice bowl, pita, or even a salad! I especially love it with my Mediterranean Turkey Bowls.

Make Ahead & Storage

Hummus will keep for a couple weeks in the fridge. Just store chilled in a lidded container.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make hummus without tahini?

Technically, yes, but it won't have that distinct hummus flavor.

Why is my hummus bitter?

Try using less tahini and make sure your lemon is fresh. Older lemons tend to be bitter. Try adding an extra pinch or two of salt to counteract the bitterness.

Is hummus gluten free?

Yes, hummus is gluten free according to this recipe.

How long does homemade hummus last?

Hummus will last a couple weeks chilled in the fridge.

Easy Homemade Hummus

Yield: 3 cups
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes

Make the best easy homemade hummus in just 5 minutes with canned chickpeas, tahini, and lemon. Naturally gluten-free with endless flavor variations!

Ingredients

  • 2 15-oz cans garbanzo beans (chickpeas), drained and well-rinsed
  • ⅓ c freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 T tahini, well stirred
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • salt, to taste
  • ¼ c olive oil, plus more for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Place all of the ingredients plus ¼ cup water in the bowl of a food processor. Buzz it up until it's smooth, scraping the sides of the bowl as necessary.
  2. Transfer to a serving bowl and drizzle with a little olive oil and your choice of garnish. I really loved a little chili crunch mixed in.

Notes

Tahini is a paste made from toasted sesame seeds and has almost the consistency of peanut butter. You should be able to find it either near the peanut butter or in the ethnic aisle of your grocery store. It adds a distinct flavor to hummus that you can't get otherwise.
