Phillips Chocolate Cake


This is still the best chocolate cake I’ve tried. Sorry you can’t see it underneath all the decor. It’s in there, I promise. And when we have some leftover long enough to photograph, I’ll show you.

Phillips Chocolate Cake


  • 1 stick butter (4 oz)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Combine butter, water, and cocoa in a saucepan. Bring to boil.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt and soda.
  4. Add boiling mixture to dry ingredients. Add buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla and mix until thoroughly combined.
  5. Pour into 2 greased, 8-inch round cake pans or a 9×13 cake pan. Bake for 20-25 min.
