Despite how this may look, I am only partially venturing into geekdom because it will make organizing your recipes so much easier. You'll thank me later.
(And for the Mac followers who are cringing at this picture of a Microsoft program... please hear me out. I complain a lot about Microsoft's products. This is the first one that I have found to be absolutely perfect for what I need it to do.)
Like I said last week, I wanted all my recipes in digital format. I wanted to be able to print and email them easily. I wanted to be able to search by ingredient, add pictures to recipes, and keep things I want to try separate from things I already tried. Lucky for me Microsoft released the newest version of OneNote, which was an answer to my demanding prayer.
If you've never used OneNote, here's a snapshot of the interface:

OK, go grab a snack, get comfy, and I'll give you a tour...
OneNote basically holds "notebooks" on your computer. I only use one notebook, which is for recipes. You can divide your "notebook" into sections. Each section can have as many pages as you want. So, for example, I have a section called "Main Dishes". Within "Main Dishes", I have sub-sections (or tabs) for different types of dishes, i.e. "Chicken", "Beef", etc.
![]()
Each one of my section tabs contains recipes. Each recipe is on its own page, listed on the right-hand side.

When you click on the name of the recipe, it appears in the main viewing area. Easy, right?

Oh, it gets better. You can add pages or sections, simply by clicking on the dropdown menu from the main toolbar.

I just added a blank page here. Just click anywhere on the page and start typing. How easy is that? Whatever you type in the box on the top of the page will appear on the index tab on the right.

What's nice is if you find a recipe online, just copy it and paste it on a blank page! OneNote automatically includes a link at the bottom so you can refer back to the original website. You can also drag and drop pictures onto your pages.

Here's my favorite feature!! Say I have a bunch of spinach leftover that I need to use, and I want to search for recipes containing spinach. Right above the index tabs, you'll see a box that has a magnifying glass in it.

I clicked in it, typed spinach and pressed enter. OneNote searched through my whole notebook (or where ever you tell it to search) and found all the recipes containing spinach. It also highlighted the names of the recipes so they're easy to see.

Taking this one step further... if you click on "View List", which appears in the yellow search result box, it will open up a panel on the side that lists all the recipes included in your search. And each recipe is a link that will take you directly to it. I love this.

You can also give your recipes "Tags" like, "low-carb" or "quick & easy" or "recipes that my kids liked". Then you can pull up all the recipes in a specific tag. There are so many things you can do with this program. I probably haven't found all of them yet.
If you'd like to give OneNote a try, you can download a trial version for free from the Microsoft website. Click HERE to do that.
If you have OneNote and would like something handy to use as a reference, I'd recommend Quick Start Cards from BrainStorm Inc.. (Psst... I used to work for them before I moved to California. Not only do they make great stuff, but they are a great group of people.) Here's a link to the OneNote Quick Start Card page.
Getting all the recipes into OneNote is a little time consuming as most of us work from cookbooks or written recipes, but I promise you it's well worth it. You'll wonder what you ever did without it. You'll also wish you had a laptop mounted on the wall of your kitchen.
That's next on my wish list.

Thanks for the fabulous link to BrainStorm's site. I can already feel our SEO page rankings and OneNote sales rising . . .
Like that? Haha... ya, I'm sure Andrea would appreciate more onesie sales :)
That's hilarious! Andrea gets about 40-50 amazon orders daily (probably takes up a 3rd of her day). OH, btw - I clicked on your link for BSI's site and it doesn't work. You need the www before brainstorminc.com.
I was reading this and thinking, I should send Nat a QSC to see what other awesome things she could apply to her eCookbook! how funny.
Thanks for checking my link. It's fixed now :)
I would love a OneNote QSC. I almost swiped one when I was there last. LOL. Maybe I'll ask E & J for one when I come visit in a couple of weeks.
don't worry about it! I'll send you one as a sample ;)
That way you can start using it ASAP.
Want to email me your address?

I'll see if Andrea's willing to add it to her pile...
Oh, man, a few days ago Rebecca said to me, "Do you read Natalie's food blog?" (Confession time -- I don't!) "Anyway, Natalie talked about this program she uses to organize her recipes on her computer, it's called OneNote ..."
And little did Rebecca know that I knew exactly what OneNote was and owned a copy of it already. And so I installed it on her computer and she loves it so much! So if you want to send her recipes you can send OneNote files and I'm sure she would love you for it. :-)
Awesome! OneNote rules!
She could just copy and paste it from an email... i think that would be easier. Plus I'm not sure how to send just one recipe in OneNote format. I think I'd have to send her a whole section.
Do you use a template for your recipes on one note? Your food photography is great! What camera/lens are you using?
Hi Joan! No, I don't use a template. I just cut and paste the recipes as is into a new page in OneNote.
Thanks for the compliment, too! Would you believe I just use a little Canon Elph point and shoot camera? No fancy equipment . . . yet. :)
Hey Natalie! This is Kathryn, not Jon :)
I love your new site, btw. Your about page is really cute :)
Since I am a Mac user, OneNote does make me cringe, but today I discovered another program that seems to accomplish the same thing. It's called MacGourmet. It's basically a database... you can search by keyword, name and source. It costs 24.99, but you can download a trial version first.
The cool thing is, you can sync it with your iPod Touch and bring your recipes anywhere. That makes me geek-out!

Wow, leave it to Mac to bring out the perfect product after I've already set up shop in a MS one. :) I love the idea of syncing with an iPod! Although, I'd probably end up paying 24.99 + the price of a new iPod. Mine's a dinosaur. Seriously. It doesn't even have a COLOR screen, much less a touch screen. One day...
If you get it set up, you'll have to let me come over and see! :)
Natalie-
I was just browsing through your site and saw your comments about OneNote. I actually have this on my computer but didn't really know what to do with it. I started moving my recipes over. Love it! My poor little notebook that I keep all my fave recipes in (spiral) got wet the other day and has now puffed up to 3 times its size. Luckily I can open all the pages! I'm going to start transferring my recipes today! Thanks for the info and tips!

Jodi - you will be so giddy when you get done and see how wonderful OneNote is!! Transferring the recipes is a lot of work though, but definitely worth it.
Yay! Another convert!!
